Garrett Garza captures shot put title at Texas A&M University Invite

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas Lutheran All-American Garrett Garza won the shot put at the Texas A&M Invite Saturday with a toss of 17.56 meters (57 feet, 7-1/2 inches).
 
Garza, the national runner-up in the shot put at the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, bested a field at Texas A&M that included 15 athletes.
 
Garza, a senior, bested Marco Arevalo of Northwestern by over a meter. Garza came within .54 of meter (1 foot, 9-1/4 inches) of the meet record.
 
Garza's performance highlighted a good day for the TLU throwers, who set five new personal records and added a new school mark.
 
Freshman thrower Scottie Reyes set the new school record in the men's weight throw. Reyes posted a mark of 15.62 meters (51-3) and finished fourth in the event.
 
Senior jumper Dalton Masters set the new school indoor mark in the high jump with a clearance of 1.89 meters (6 feet, 2-1/4 inches). Masters took seventh in the event.
 
Other TLU PRs went to: Tia Hart in the shot put (11.34 meters), Dejah Carr in the shot put (12.02), Reyes in the shot put (14.73), Zachary Herman in the shot put (15.13), Carr in the weight throw (15.47), and Jalen Starks in the weight throw (14.21).
 
Carr was 12th in the shot put, and Hart took 13th in the event. Carr was ninth in the weight throw.
 
Herman was third in the shot put, and Reyes was fifth in the shot. Starks was seventh in the weight throw.
 
TLU senior Ashley Rynard, an indoor All-American in the 800, finished eighth in the event in College Station. Rynard produced a time of 2 minutes, 16.00 seconds.
 
Ezrael Powell posted a time of 22.52 in the 200, won his heat, and finished 17th overall. Paris Foster was 12th in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.57.
 
TLU starts its Outdoor Track & Field season on March 7 at the Trinity Invitational in San Antonio.
