Tournament success for Bulldogs at ITA Southwest Regional Championships

ABILENE, Texas – Texas Lutheran Men's Tennis concluded a successful stretch of play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional Championships over the weekend with the doubles team of Eric Wendt (Round Rock/Round Rock) and Joshua Bowman (San Antonio/Clark) reaching the finals of the "C" Flight doubles and singles player Brett Glasco (Big Spring/Forsan/Sul Ross State) competing in the "F" Flight final.
 
"I was happy with our results this weekend," said Michael Hunt, TLU's head coach for men's and women's tennis. "We had a doubles team reach an ITA Regional championship match for the first time since I've been at TLU. We won a couple of consolation finals and reached a main draw singles championship match, as well."
 
"Carlos Subealdea won two rounds in A Flight singles and had set points in each of his two losses. We had six newcomers playing their first collegiate matches, and four of them picked up wins. The two that didn't (pick up wins) competed in A Flight and drew seeds in the first round of both singles and doubles."
 
Wendt and Bowman entered the "C" Flight as the No. 4 seed and won three matches before falling in the final to a team from LeTourneau. En route to the final, Wendt and Bowman defeated doubles teams from LeTourneau, East Texas Baptist and McMurry.
 
"Eric and Joshua really improved over the course of the weekend," said Hunt. "We put them together as a doubles team only the week before due to Nick Roccaforte's illness, so they didn't have a lot of experience together. It was nice to see the senior (Eric) mentoring the freshman (Joshua) and how well they adjusted to each other over their four matches."
 
In the "A" Flight, Subealdea (Tulia/Tulia) dropped his opening match, 7-6 (4) 6-3, to No. 12 seed Hunter Bajoit. Subealdea then won matches against players from McMurry and Hardin-Simmons before falling to a playing from University of Texas at Dallas in the consolation quarterfinals of "A" Flight.

"Carlos really impressed me and I had a number of other coaches come up to me and say how much they thought he has improved," said Hunt. "We had to throw him in at No. 1 last year as a sophomore, and he took his lumps at the time, so it was nice to see him enjoying being on the court again and competing like I know he can. He had chances to win both the matches he dropped, as well, so it was very encouraging overall."
 
Glasco fought his way to the "F" Flight final with wins over players from Howard Payne and McMurry.
 
"I was happy for Brent to pick up a few wins and reach the F Flight championship match," said Hunt. "He's been sick recently and has fought through it. It was good to see him able to work through his matches. Josh (Flores) also got two wins in that flight."
 
The Bulldogs had 14 players competing in the ITA Southwest Regionals.
 
"Overall, we were very pleased with how we competed, especially for our first competition of the fall," said Hunt. "When you consider that we also dropped eight (out of nine) 10-point (match) tiebreakers, we were really close to having a really great tournament. If we turn half of those match tiebreakers around, our results might have been the best we've ever had at a men's ITA Regional."

The Bulldogs' fall season continues this coming Friday and Saturday with TLU's Ninth Annual Doc Skogman Invitational. The tournament for men and women will take place on courts at TLU and throughout Seguin.
