TLU's Luis Green named to United Soccer Coaches All-America Third Team

2018 United Soccer Coaches DIII All-America Team

SEGUIN, Texas --  The postseason awards keep on coming for Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer as first-year forward Luis Green was named Thursday evening to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III All-America Third Team.

Green (Monterrey, Mexico/Smithson Valley (Texas)) is the second Bulldog in school history to claim an All-America honor in men's or women's soccer. TLU Athletics Hall of Famer Roger Gomez was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-America selection in 1991.

The All-America honor comes after Green was named Tuesday to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA DIII Men's All-West Region First Team. He was the only freshman named to the First Team.

Green's All-West Region honor and his Third Team All-America selection bring his 2018 post-season awards number to six.

Before the All-America and All-West Region awards were announced, Green was named the 2018 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the SCAC Newcomer of the Year. Plus, he earned a spot on the All-SCAC First Team and was selected to the SCAC All-Tournament Team.

Green's selection as SCAC Player of the Year represented the first time a freshman took home the award in the 16-year history of the award. He also was the first TLU student-athlete to take home top men's soccer offensive honors since the Bulldogs joined the SCAC prior to the 2013 season.

In his first season as a Bulldog, Green led the league in goals scored (18), points (38), shots (87) and game-winning goals (6). He became the sixth freshman to lead the league in goals scored. Green saw action in all 19 of TLU's matches in 2018.

Green's 18 goals represent the fourth-highest, single-season total in TLU history and the most in the school's non-scholarship era (1999 to present). Ariel Larre scored 22 goals in 1994, and Gomez had seasons of 20 and 19 in 1998 and 1989, respectively.

Green's point total of 38 (18 goals, 2 assists) is the fourth-highest for a single season in school history and, again, the most in TLU's non-scholarship era.

Larre had 49 points (22 goals, 5 assists) in 1994. Gomez posted 44 points (19 goals, 6 assists) in 1989 and tallied 42 points (20 goals, 2 assists) in 1988. Gomez is TLU's all-time goal scorer (81) and all-time points leader (137).

Green led TLU to the 2018 SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal, where the Bulldogs fell in overtime 2-1 to eventual conference champion Trinity. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Men's Soccer "Sweet 16."

The Bulldogs, directed by SCAC Coach of the Year Eddie Salazar, posted an 11-8 overall record with a 9-6 mark in conference play in the 2018 season. The Bulldogs advanced to the conference tournament semifinal after a 5-1 victory over University of Dallas in the tournament quarterfinal. Green scored two goals in that tournament win.
