TLU's Nathan Haley wins McMurry Rockwind Links Intercollegiate in playoff

HOBBS, N.M. -- Texas Lutheran senior Nathan Haley (Richmond/Foster) won the McMurry Rockwind Links Intercollegiate on the first playoff hole and propelled the Bulldogs to a third-place team finish.

Monday at Rockwind Community Links, Haley overcame a first-round deficit of two shots to McMurry's Elliot Bourke. Haley posted a 2-under-par 70 in the final round, and Bourke closed with an even-par round of 72.

Bourke was the overnight leader after a 3-under 69 on Sunday. Haley opened with a 1-under 71 in the first round.

Haley's victory was his first at the collegiate level. The four-year letterman was 10th at last week's John Bohmann Memorial Invitational, hosted by TLU at Seguin's Max Starcke Park Municipal Golf Course.

Haley's score of 2-under Monday combined with Matthew McArthur's 74 and a pair of 76s (from Evan Skaar and Cameron Carter) to push TLU up two spots in the team standings, from fifth to third.

The Bulldogs finished with a team total of 603, four shots behind second-place Hardin-Simmons and three in front of Schreiner.

McMurry won its second straight tournament of the fall. The War Hawks, champions of TLU's Bohmann Memorial last week, won their own tournament by 18 shots over HSU. McMurry posted a 289 on Sunday and a 292 on Monday.

After McMurry, HSU, TLU and Schreiner, team places of fifth, sixth and seventh went to University of Dallas, University of the Southwest (N.M.), and East Texas Baptist.

TLU's McArthur tied for seventh, and Skaar tied for 23rd. Carter and Chase Maus tied for 34th and 37th, respectively. Peyton Campas tied for 49th.

The Bulldogs' next tournament is the LeTourneau Tempest Intercollegiate, set for Oct. 7-8 at Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater, Texas.
