Bulldogs shoot low round of tournament, take third at Abilene Intercollegiate

ABILENE, Texas – Texas Lutheran Men's Golf shot the low round of the tournament, a 284 on Tuesday, and finished in third place at the Hardin-Simmons University Abilene Intercollegiate.
 
At Diamondback Golf Course, the Bulldogs came within six shots of the team title. Southwestern posted a 285 on Tuesday to claim the tournament win by two shots over McMurry. TLU finished four shots behind McMurry.
 
TLU started the day eight shots behind McMurry and seven shots behind Southwestern.
 
TLU senior Colin Uecker (Kerrville/Tivy) matched the low round of the day and came within one shot of the low round of the tournament by firing a 3-under-par 71 on Tuesday.
 
Uecker rebounded from a 75 Monday and moved up to a tie for fifth overall.
 
Bulldog sophomore Matthew McArthur (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) posted a 2-under-par 69 in the second round and also recorded a tie for fifth.
 
Nathan Haley (Richmond/Foster) and Chase Maus (Manor/Manor) carded a 74 and a 73, respectively, in the closing round. Haley came home in 12th, and Maus moved up to 18th.
 
Evan Skaar (Coleraine, Minn./Homeschool/Greenway) recorded a 79 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 42nd.
 
Southwestern (574), McMurry (576), and TLU (580) were followed in the final team standings by: host HSU (587), LeTourneau (601), University of Texas at Dallas (604), Mary Hardin-Baylor (606), Howard Payne (626), and Centenary College (631).
 
McMurry individual golfer Clemente Yanes won the tournament with a 3-under-par total. Yanes shot a 70 in the first round and closed with a 69. Yanes won by a stroke over Matthew Christl and Cade Osgood of Southwestern.
 
The Abilene Intercollegiate is the final golf tournament of the Bulldogs' 2018 fall season. The TLU spring season begins in February 2019.
