Austin College knocks Texas Lutheran out of first place in SCAC standings

SEGUIN, Texas -- Austin College knocked Texas Lutheran out of first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 96-92 road win Saturday in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium.

Austin College improved to 7-8 overall and to 4-4 in the SCAC. TLU dropped to 10-6 overall and to 7-2 in the SCAC.

Austin College forward Michael Holland scored 35 points, pulled down 17 rebounds, dished out seven assists, and collected four steals.

Holland played all but 34 seconds in the game and made 12 of his 19 shots. He was 11-for-14 at the free throw line, and six of his 17 rebounds came on the offensive glass.

Roman Strickland added 19 points and seven rebounds for the Kangaroos.

The Kangaroos out-rebounded TLU 48 to 32 and shot 54 percent for the game. TLU was held to 39.3 percent from the field. The Bulldogs made 47.1 percent of their total shots in the second half and had a 47.4 percent showing (9-for-19) from the arc in the final 20 minutes.

After shooting 29.6 percent from the floor in the first half, TLU overcame a nine-point halftime deficit and took a seven-point lead with 12:05 to play in the game.

But Austin College would not go away. The Roos regained the lead at the 4:37 mark on a three-point play from Holland.

After a TLU bucket from Caleb Lister, Austin College scored four consecutive points, with a jumper from Chanston Goodman and a layup from Holland, to regain the lead.

The Austin lead grew to nine with 15 seconds to play before a late Bulldog rally cut the lead down to four.

Sebastian Andrade led the Bulldogs with a career-high 36 points. He added 13 rebounds. Andrade made a career-high 18 free throws in 23 attempts. He shot 8-for-24 from the field.

Jamir Mason added 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Trystin Silas chipped in 13 points, and Caleb Lister recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Austin College posted a 50-22 edge in points in the paint and a a 33-19 edge in fast break points. The Kangaroos bench out-scored the TLU bench 35-8.

TLU continues conference play next Friday and Saturday with road games at Trinity and Schreiner.
