TLU Men's Basketball completes Bulldog double-dip of SCAC hoops titles

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran won its fourth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship in five years by holding off a determined University of Dallas squad 99-95 in double overtime in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs advance to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament for the fourth time in school history. TLU will learn its NCAA tournament destination and opponent Monday at 11:30 a.m. central via the NCAA's DIII Selection Show.

TLU rallied from 17 points down in the second half. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the second half with two free throws from Shawn Hamilton (San Antonio/MacArthur) with 50 seconds to play in regulation.

Moments earlier, Bulldog point guard Nathan Josephs (San Antonio/Clark) drilled a three-pointer to tie the game. Josephs' shot came at the 1:35 mark.

After Jai Love tied the game for Dallas with 27 seconds to play, Josephs had a good look at a game-winner. His short jumper rimmed out at the buzzer.

In the first overtime, Dallas took a last-second shot with a chance to win. Joshua Nunn's layup with a second in the OT nearly dropped.

In the second overtime, Josephs' three-point play with 47 seconds to play gave TLU a two-point lead, 94-92. Hamilton then hit one free throw, and Sebastian Andrade (El Paso/Americas) made two more free throws with 11 seconds on the clock.

Alex Cage (Austin/McNeil) iced the game with two free throws with four seconds remaining.

SCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player Jackson Willoughby (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) scored 21 to lead the Bulldogs. He shot 9-for-15 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs put six players into double figures. Josephs and Hamilton had 18 and 17, respectively, and Andrade added 15. Cage and Jacob Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.

Josephs dished out eight assists and had five rebounds and two steals.

In addition to Willoughby's MVP and All-Tournament selection, the Bulldogs put Josephs and Hamilton on the all-tourney team.

Michael Wambsganss hit his first 10 shots and scored 35 points for the Crusaders. He also collected 13 rebounds. Nunn added 15 points.
