Texas Lutheran Men hold on for 65-59 SCAC win versus Trinity


SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran survived a last-minute rally from Trinity University and grabbed a 65-59 home conference win Saturday night in Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court).

TLU currently sits at the top of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 8-2 record. The Bulldogs are 13-6 overall.

TLU has now won 10 of its last 11 contests since a 3-5 start and the current six-game winning streak the Bulldogs are riding is the first since the 2016-17 season.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 3-16 overall and to 3-7 in conference. 

Sebastian Andrade (El Paso/Americas) paced the Bulldogs with 16 points and nine rebounds. Andrade finished the night with 55 percent shooting from the field. He added three assists and a steal. 

Andrade and senior Jacob Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) hit a pair of threes to give the Bulldogs a four-point lead in the opening minutes of action. 

TLU never relinquished the lead in the first half. The Bulldogs lead by as many as 14 before the Tigers closed the gap to 10 at the half, 38-28.

Back-to-back jumpers from Andrade kept the Bulldogs ahead by 10 until a Nathan Josephs (San Antonio/Texas State) three gave TLU their largest lead of the half (11) before the Tigers went on a seven-point scoring run. 

Trinity's Carter Laramore hit a layup at the 10:24 mark to tie things up at 49-49. The Tigers had their first lead of the night, 52-49, following a Jordan Lippman three-pointer.

Senior Harris Jowell (Brock/Brock) responded for the Bulldogs with a slam dunk to cut the Tigers' lead to just one. 

With 5:44 remaining, Alex Cage hit a jumper to tie the game 54-54. Josephs hit a three to give the Bulldogs a three-point advantage with 4:58 left on the clock. 

A Trinity free throw with three minutes to go saw the third and final tie score of the evening at 58-58. Kouremetis hit a pair of threes to lift the Bulldogs to 64-59 before Jackson Willoughby (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) made the final free throw of the night. 

Along with Andrade, three other Bulldogs hit double digits. Josephs and Kouremetis registered 15 and 14 points, respectively. Josephs hit five of his nine three-point attempts to go along with three assists and two rebounds while Kouremetis added four from behind the arc and six assists. 

Willoughby chipped in 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. 

The Bulldogs hit the road for their next conference contests. TLU will face Johnson & Wales (Colo.) Friday at 7:30 p.m. (MST) and Colorado College on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (MST).
