Former TLU Football standout Johnny Garcia returns for his second stint with the Bulldogs coaching staff following two seasons as offensive line coach at McMurry.

In his first season working with the line, the McMurry offense ranked in the top half of the conference with 364.1 yards per game — the most production since 2015. Additionally four starters on the offensive line were named to the all-conference team, including third team selection Vern Angton III and honorable mentions Tyce Alexander, Daniel Hernandez and Daniel Zarzoza III.

A former standout player at Texas Lutheran University from 2014-2017, Garcia reunited with one of his former coaches in McMurry Offensive Coordinator Gabe Garcia. After his playing career, Johnny Garcia worked as a student assistant for TLU and served as the Co-Offensive Line Coach for the JV team. He worked his way into a graduate assistant position the following semester, working with the offensive line and tight ends from December 2018 to May 2020.

For the Spring 2021 season, Garcia served as the Defensive Line Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the Bulldogs. Garcia was tasked with assisting the head coach with practice plans, breaking down film, providing coaching techniques to his position group and implementing strength and conditioning plans.

In his three seasons on staff under coaches Carl Gustafson and Ricky Matt, the Bulldogs compiled a solid 18-7 record.

As a player, Garcia won TLU's Thomas Eddy award in 2017, which is given to the most outstanding scholar-athlete in the program that season. The Bulldogs had a 25-16 record over his four seasons, including an NCAA Division III Playoffs appearance his freshman season and two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference titles as a freshman and sophomore.

Garcia graduated from TLU in August 2017 with a degree in kinesiology and exercise science. He is originally from San Antonio.
