Texas Lutheran Defeats McMurry 28-21

SEGUIN, TX -- DaKory Willis accounted for 124 yards of total offense including a 26-yard rushing touchdown with 8:40 remaining left to help Texas Lutheran hold on for a 28-21 victory over McMurry (2-4, 2-4 American Southwest Conference) on Saturday at Bulldog Stadium.

After trading touchdowns late in the first quarter, Bulldogs (2-5. 2-4 American Southwest Conference) maintained a tie or the lead throughout the remainder of the game. The game carried a 14-14 score into halftime before the Bulldogs outscored the War Hawks 14-7 in the second half to stop their four game losing streak.

The Bulldogs accumulated 395 yards of total offense and was +2 in the turnover margin thanks to an interception from Eugene Robinson IV (Lake Charles, LA/Fort Bend Hightower) in the early moments of the second half and a fumble recovery from Dimitri Zavala (Houston/Elkins)

DaKory Willis (Flatonia/Flatonia) had 10 carries for 114 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Seth Cosme (Angleton/Angleton) was 7-10 passing for 74 yards & a touchdown - adding 77 yards on the ground, while Aaron Sotelo (Castroville/Medina Valley) had 5 catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Cornerback Dimitri Zavala led the Bulldogs with 8 tackles while safety Sultan Abdullah (Sweeny/Columbia) and defensive lineman Christian Monroe (College Station/College Station) had 5 tackles each. Texas Lutheran had 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss in the game.

McMurry opened the game's scoring late in the first quarter but the Bulldogs would respond with a touchdown of their own courtesy of a 33-yard rushing touchdown from DaKory Willis to tie the game 7-7, at the 1:18 mark in the first quarter.

An eight-yard rushing touchdown from Jacob Forton (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) gave the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead halfway through the second quarter. The War Hawks would score a touchdown of their own in the closing seconds of the first half to bring the score to 14-14.

The Bulldogs regained the lead late in the third quarter with an 18-yard passing touchdown from Seth Cosme to Aaron Sotelo putting TLU ahead 21-14. A rushing touchdown from Willis midway through the fourth gave the Bulldogs a lead that was insurmountable for the War Hawks as the Bulldogs ran out the clock on their final drive to close the game.
