Texas Lutheran releases 2021 regular-season football schedule
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Football will play a 10-game regular-season schedule in the fall of 2021 after playing a five-game season - shortened and delayed due to COVID-19 - in the spring of 2021.
TLU's 2021 schedule includes five home games and five road games. Should the Bulldogs win the American Southwest Conference title or receive an at-large bid from the NCAA, TLU's season would be extended by a postseason run in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Bulldogs open their 2021 season with a road game on Sept. 4 against Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. The game versus HPU is set for a 1 p.m. start at Brownwood's Gordon Wood Stadium.
The Bulldogs, coming off a 3-2 overall record and 3-1 conference mark in the 2021 spring season, open their home schedule on Sept. 11 with an American Southwest Conference games against Austin College.
The Kangaroos are back in the ASC after a 15-year hiatus. TLU and Austin College played together in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference from 2013 to 2016 and played together in the ASC from 1998 to 2005.
The 2021 season will be TLU's fifth season back in the ASC. TLU played in the ASC from 1998 to 2012 and returned to the ASC (in football only) in the 2017 season.
Since returning to the ASC, the Bulldogs are 23-8 in conference play and 24-11 overall.
TLU's five home games in 2021 include contests against: Austin College (on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.), Trinity (on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.), Belhaven (on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m.); McMurry (on Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.), and Southwestern (on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.).
All TLU home games will be played at Bulldog Stadium (Frank L. Dunne Field), located on the TLU campus. Current campus plans call for Bulldog Stadium attendance to be capped at 75 percent.
The Bulldogs' five road games in 2021 are against: HPU, Sul Ross State (in Alpine, Texas on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.), Mary Hardin-Baylor (in Belton, Texas on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m.), East Texas Baptist (in Marshall, Texas on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.), and Hardin-Simmons (in Abilene, Texas on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.).
TLU's home game with Trinity on Sept. 18 renews a longstanding rivalry between the Bulldogs and the Tigers. The two area rivals have not played each other since the teams played twice in the 2016 season.
The 2021 meeting between TLU and Trinity will be the 31st all-time game between the two universities. Trinity holds a 17-13 edge in the series.
The Bulldogs open preseason camp in Seguin on Aug. 13 and Aug. 16. First-year players report on Aug. 13, and the rest of the team reports on Aug. 16.
