TLU Baseball Beats Dallas 9-5 on Sunday

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran baseball ended their 13-game homestand that stretched for almost the entire duration of March, by salvaging the series against Dallas with a 9-5 win on Sunday at Katt-Isbel Field.

Texas Lutheran (12-11, 1-5 SCAC) scored in five out of eight innings they went to the plate to overcome an early deficit.

Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) started and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and five walks. He struck out three batters to record his second win of the season.

Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/McCollum) was outstanding out of the bullpen, pitching the final 3.2 innings only allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts to pick up his first save of the season. He came into the game with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth and finished the game.

Xavier Arias (La Vernia/Nixon-Smiley) set the table for the TLU offense, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, two stolen bases, and a team-high three runs scored.

Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored and Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

TLU scored two runs in the bottom of the first following a throwing error from the Dallas third baseman. The Crusaders would cut the lead in half in the top half of the second.

The Bulldogs scratched a run across in the bottom of the second courtesy of an RBI double from Aric Vasquez.

The Crusaders immediately took the lead in the top of the third after a two-out, bases loaded double as they overtook the Bulldogs, 4-3.

Texas Lutheran tied the game 4-4 in the third with a sacrifice bunt from Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham). Xavier Arias was hit by a pitch to start the inning, he would then steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch before Draehn's bunt.

The Crusaders would regain the lead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.

The Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on just one hit. Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) started it with a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a Dallas error. An infield single from Adam Peavy would plate Kesselring to tie the game at five. The Crusaders would walk Carson Draehn before another fielding blunder would lead to Peavy coming around to score from second. Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) would drive in the third run with an RBI fielder's choice to make the score 7-5.

TLU tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth with Arias's two-run homer, his team-leading fourth of the season.

Texas Lutheran will venture out on the road for the first time since February and the first time in conference play as they travel to Sherman to face Austin College in a three-game series starting on Thursday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM on Thursday. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
