TLU Baseball Beats Centenary, 7-2, in Conference Opener

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball battled to a 7-2 win over Centenary in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener on Friday night at Katt-Isbel Field. Joe Burch (Geronimo/Navarro) pitched a complete game and struck out 13 batters to pick up his second win of the season. Burch allowed just two runs on six hits and only issued one walk.

The Bulldogs hot streak at the plate continued launching three more home runs Friday night to bring their conference leading total to 18.

Blake Cappadona (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, the first of his collegiate career, while Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/Waxahachie) went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, the first of his collegiate career.

Centenary would push across a run in the top of the first and Texas Lutheran would respond by scoring in the first five innings of the game.

Holden Philippus (San Antonio/San Antonio Christian) would have an immediate answer in the first inning with an RBI double down the left field line to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

Phillippus would push across another run in the second inning for the Bulldogs to give Texas Lutheran a 2-1 lead. Texas Lutheran would homer in the next three innings - Cappadona in the third, Sanchez in the fourth, and Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) in the fifth. Post has homered in three of his last four games with his four home runs only trailing teammate Joe Jimenez (San Antonio/Johnson) in the conference.

The seven runs scattered across the first five innings was more than enough for Burch as he mowed down the Gents for most of the night.

Texas Lutheran and Centenary will face off in a doubleheader Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field to wrap the conference opening series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 and 3:30 PM. All streaming and live stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
