TLU Baseball collects third consecutive ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs have been recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association with a Team Academic Excellence Award for the third consecutive year.

The Bulldogs and fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference members Austin College and Schreiner are among the 109 NCAA Division III baseball programs to pick up the Team Academic Excellence Award for 2019-20.

The ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award is given to each team that posts a team GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the entire 2019-20 academic year.

Previously, TLU Baseball was named the TLU Athletics Men's Team GPA Award winner for a second consecutive year. The TLU GPA awards count the previous spring and the current year's fall semester.

The ABCA award counts the academic performance of the current academic year. The cumulative GPA for the team must be over a 3.0 for the two semesters combined.

TLU Baseball posted a 3.191 in the fall semester and a 3.499 in the spring term.

Criteria for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award include:

  • Must be a high school or college team
  • Head coach must be a current ABCA member
  • Team must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the 2019-20 academic year (see form for details regarding 2020 academic interruptions). GPA may not be rounded up.

The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Sports Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
