Methodist tops Texas Lutheran 11-8 at Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Methodist University (N.C.) came back from a 7-2 deficit to defeat the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Sunday at the Rusty Greer / Jackie Moore Classic at AirHogs Stadium.
 
Methodist, out of Fayetteville, N.C., improved to 2-1 on the year. The Bulldogs fell to 1-2.
 
The Monarchs scored a run in the sixth, five runs in the seventh, two runs in the eighth, and another run in the ninth to erase the TLU lead and post the non-conference victory.
 
Methodist out-hit TLU 17-13 and took advantage of five Bulldog errors. The Monarchs also stole six bases.
 
Methodist first baseman Jacob Austin was 3-for-5 with three RBI, and designated hitter Rob Wilkerson was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Monarch center fielder Clay Richardson scored three runs and drove in a run.
 
The Bulldogs received their third consecutive quality start of the Greer/Moore Classic. On Sunday, sophomore right-hander Joe Burch tossed five innings and allowed only two runs. He struck out three and walked one.
 
The TLU bullpen allowed seven earned runs over the final four innings.
 
Senior outfielder Tyler Cauley hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give TLU a 3-1 lead.
 
Bulldog first baseman Cole Irby went 1-for-2 with two RBI, a run scored, and two walks.
 
Senior catcher Spencer Brandt had two hits and two runs scored, and Blade Strzelczyk recorded three hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
 
Caleb Maly and Joe Jimenez each had two hits for the Bulldogs.
 
TLU returns to action next Friday and Saturday with a three-game, non-conference road series at Hardin-Simmons. First game of the series in Abilene, Texas is set for a 6 p.m. start Friday. The Saturday doubleheader is scheduled for a noon start.
