Trinity eliminates Texas Lutheran from Seguin, Texas Regional

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Trinity Tigers eliminated Texas Lutheran from the NCAA Division III Seguin, Texas Regional with a 10-7 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Katt-Isbel Field.

TLU ends its season with an overall record of 31-14. The Bulldogs won a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Championship and received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

Trinity, the co-champion with TLU in the SCAC regular-season and the SCAC Tournament champion, advances to a second elimination game in the regional tournament. Trinity will play the loser of the Franklin (Ind.) v. Concordia Texas contest, which started at 2:30 p.m. at Katt-Isbel.

The Trinity game with Franklin or Concordia Texas will start around 6 p.m.

In the victory over TLU, Trinity erased a 7-4 lead in the seventh with a six-run burst in the bottom of the inning. Rafe Chaumette hit a two-run home run to right, and Michael Goodrich followed later in the inning with a three-run shot to left field.

Goodrich went 2-for-4 with five RBI. He had a two-RBI double in the three-run Trinity fourth.

Tyler Cauley (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) homered for TLU in the third to give TLU a 4-0 lead. Cole Irby (Buda/Hays), Joe Jimenez (San Antonio/Johnson), and Chad Curtis (Wolfforth/Frenship) each had RBI for TLU in the first.

Curtis went 3-for-5 against Trinity after going 2-for-3 Friday against Concordia Texas. Curtis drove in a pair of runs and scored a run Saturday.

Jimenez, TLU's freshman shortstop, also had three hits. He scored a run and drove in a run.

Trinity put up 18 hits against TLU pitching.

The Tigers and Bulldogs played seven games in 2019, and Trinity won four of the seven. The run differential for the seven games was +2 for Trinity, 43 to 41.

The two regional games for TLU were the final collegiate baseball games for 11 Bulldog seniors: Thomas Varner (Austin/Bowie), Drew Waller (Bellville/Bellville), Cody Rimko (Lewisville/Lewisville), Trey Albaugh (Tomball/Concordia Lutheran), Curtis, Dylan Murrell (Tomball/Memorial), Jacob Terpstra (Allen/Allen), Cody Michalec (Katy/Cinco Ranch), Nathan Malinovsky (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), Cameron Wilson (Katy/Morton Ranch), and Ethan Mueller (Converse/Judson).

This group of seniors advanced to the 2018 NCAA Division III World Series and finished as the national runner-up. These Bulldogs also won two SCAC regular-season championships, an SCAC Tournament Championship, and the NCAA DIII Spokane, Wash. Regional Championship.
