Texas Lutheran to host NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Championship

SEGUIN, Texas -- For the first time in school history, Texas Lutheran University will host an NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Championship.

The Bulldogs received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, and the university's bid to host a regional was approved.

Game times for the regional will be announced later today. The four-team, double-elimination tournament will be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.

TLU is the No. 2 seed in a regional that includes: fellow Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference school and top-seed Trinity (the SCAC champion), three-seed and American Southwest Conference champion Concordia Texas, and four-seed and Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Champion Franklin College (Ind.).

The Seguin, Texas Regional champion advances to the Super Regional Championship to face either Chapman (Calif.) or Whitman (Wash.).

TLU holds an overall record of 31-12. The Bulldogs will make their sixth appearance in an NCAA DIII Baseball regional.

TLU won a regional championship in Spokane, Wash. a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Division III College World Series in Appleton, Wis. TLU finished as the national runner-up.

TLU and Trinity shared the 2019 SCAC regular-season championship, and Trinity won two out of three games against TLU in the SCAC Championship Tournament to claim the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA post-season. The teams are 3-3 against each other in 2019.

Trinity, the 2016 national champion, holds an overall record of 33-9. The Tigers face the Grizzlies of Franklin College in the regional's first match-up. The Grizzlies are 26-13 overall.

TLU and Concordia Texas meet in Friday's second game. The squads are long-time rivals and former members together in the ASC. TLU left the ASC after the 2012-13 season and has played as a member of the SCAC since that time. Concordia Texas is 34-10 overall.

TLU and Concordia Texas played in the Spokane, Wash. Regional opener in 2018. TLU won that game 9-8 en route to a 4-0 regional record last season.
