Bulldogs fall in Kerrville as Schreiner prevails 7-6 in record-tying 21 innings

KERRVILLE, Texas -- The Schreiner Mountaineers upset sixth-ranked Texas Lutheran 7-6 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record-tying 21-inning game at Schreiner's Bob Henry Field.

Schreiner and TLU tied the SCAC record for most innings played in a single game. The 21 innings are the most ever played in a single game by a TLU Baseball squad.

Schreiner improved to 13-26 overall and to 6-11 in the SCAC.

TLU fell to 28-10 overall and to 13-4 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs dropped into a tie in the loss column with Trinity for the SCAC lead. TLU can secure the top seed in the upcoming SCAC Championship tournament with a win Sunday over Schreiner. A win would give TLU a share of the SCAC regular-season championship with Trinity. TLU would have the tie-breaker over Trinity since the Bulldogs took two of three from the Tigers.

Since Saturday's game took so long, six hours and 15 minutes, the series finale will be played Sunday in Kerrville. Schreiner does not have lights at its baseball field, and the teams agreed to come back Sunday with tournament seeding and an SCAC regular-season championship on the line for TLU.

Miguel Quinones hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the 21st inning to bring home Camden Camacho with the winning run.

Quinones tied the game, at 6-6, for Schreiner in the seventh with an RBI single.

After the Quinones RBI single in the seventh, neither team scored until the 21st frame.

TLU was held scoreless over its final 17 innings. TLU scored its sixth run of the game in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs took a 5-4 lead in the third with a five-run third.

Matthew Hickey (5-1) took the loss but pitched brilliantly in defeat. The freshman left-hander out of Spring (Klein Collins) tossed 10-1/3 innings and allowed just one run and six hits.

Hickey's 10-1/3 innings are the second-most innings pitched by a TLU pitcher in a single game. Brian Wallace pitched 11 shutout innings in a win against Schreiner in Kerrville in 2004.

Tyler Cauley (Mont Belvieu) drove in a pair of runs for TLU with a double in the third. Joe Jimenez (San Antonio/Johnson) had four hits and two runs scored.
