Bulldogs wrap up series sweep of Austin College with triple play

SEGUIN, Texas -- Fifth-ranked Texas Lutheran closed out a three-game series sweep of Austin College with a triple play Friday at Katt-Isbel Field.

The triple play finished off a 13-8 victory in the late game. TLU won the first game Friday 10-8. The Bulldogs won 14-4 on Thursday in the series opener.

TLU maintained a one-game lead in the loss column in the race for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship and top seed for the conference tournament. The Bulldogs improved to 27-8 overall and to 12-3 in the SCAC.

Austin College fell to 7-23 overall and to 3-12 in the SCAC.

With Austin College threatening in the ninth in the late game with two runners on and trailing by five with no outs, Drew Waller (Bellville/Bellville) coaxed a ground ball to third base that Thomas Varner (Austin/Bowie) took to the third base bag for one out and threw to Austin Colon (La Grange/La Grange) at second for the second out. Colon made the relay throw to Cole Irby (Buda/Hays) at first to get the final Austin College base-runner by a step.

In the early game, the Bulldogs rallied from two runs down in the eighth to grab that 10-8 victory. First-year players Blade Strzelczyk (San Antonio/East Central) and Joe Jimenez (San Antonio/Johnson) each hit two-run singles in the four-run eighth.

Strzelczyk tied the game with his hit. Jimenez put the Bulldogs ahead for good with his two-run single.

Matthew Hickey (Houston/Klein Collins) notched his fifth win against no losses. The freshman left-hander worked two innings and struck out three. Waller picked up the save in the early game with a third of an inning.

Irby drove in two runs in the 10-8 victory, and Cullen Motsinger (Houston/Cypress Ranch) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

In the second game, Trey Albaugh (Tomball/Concordia Lutheran) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI.

Irby added a 2-for-4 performance with three RBI and three runs scored.

Tyler Cauley (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) hit his seventh home run of the season. Austin College pitching walked Cauley eight times in the three games. Cauley, a 2018 All-American, was walked five times intentionally.

Varner produced three hits and two runs in the late game.

TLU returns to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. non-conference game in Seguin against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
